7 Rookie Mistakes to Avoid When Working with Factories in Vietnam

.
  1. Factories will help me design my product.
    • If they like you and your order volume is more than 3,000 units per style
    • If the design help can be completed in one or two meetings
  2. Factories make things they don’t design things
    • If you really need help with design, hire a company that specializes in design
  3. Factories will manage shipping my product.
    • 5% of factories will ship your product for you
    • 95% will not
    • Shipping is an industry and area of expertise distinctly different from manufacturing
    • If they do, they will add a service charge
    • Plan to hire a freight forwarding company
  4. Factories will take care of quality control for me.
    • They have their own in-house QC
    • You still need to do at least one inline inspection($250)
    • You still need to do at least on 3rd Party final inspection ($250)
  5. Plan to hire a QC company
    • I will hire an agent to help me produce small quantity.
    • Most agents charge 10% like Li & Fung
    • For small quantity, even if the agent fee is 20%, the agent will lose money
    • Do the math and figure out how much an agent will make off your small volume order and compare it to how much it would cost you to travel to Vietnam and do the work yourself.
  6. I will find Lulu Lemon fabric in the market to start small.
    • Lulu Lemon fabrics don’t make it to local wet markets
    • Even if they did, the seller probably does not know that it is Lulu Lemon fabric
    • What you see is what you get- there is no documentation for fabric in wholesale markets
  7. I need my product before I can launch my brand and find customers.
    • Customers take longer to acquire
    • Products can be acquired simply by paying factories to produce
    • Focus your time and money on building an audience first
  8. I don't want to take investors money.
    • If you are not confident enough to use other peoples money to invest in yourself then why would you use your money to invest in your self?
    • Investors only invest in businesses they believe will succeed; pitching to investors is a free litmus test to know if your business idea is good or bad
    • Don’t be afraid; pitch to investors and get free advice
  9. My product does not exist on the market
    • Hire someone to find similar products to yours and most likely they will
    • 99% chance you are not the first person to come up with your idea. Someone already thought about it and it failed.
  10. It does not matter if your product exists or not. What is important is that people by from you.

What happens after the Webinar?

If you write a recommendation for me on Linkedin that includes suggestions for making the webinar better then I will introduce you to one factory in Vietnam that meets your requirements - if any.

Let's Meet at A Chocolate Factory or Connect on Linkedin

Do you like chocolate? I love it. Especially if it is authentic single sourced quality chocolate 100% made in Vietnam. That is exactly what Maison Marou is all about. It's a coffee shop, chocolate shop, and chocolate factory, rolled into one with an amazing positive atmosphere. I go there almost every day after work to finish the things that I didn't finish during working hours. It's my favorite place to meet friends and potential clients. If you wanted to get together for a quick meet and greet, then let's meet here.
